Moorland and loch

A Sutherland sea-loch, northern Scotland

Into the dark 9:50pm

This is nightfall in late April (26th) at the head of a sea loch on the north coast of Scotland. There’s a gathering of waders feeding around the mouth of a small river: ringed plover, dunlin, redshank, greenshank, common sandpiper – some arrived to breed on the hillsides round here, others just passing through on their way further north. But all full of the urges of spring; and at nightfall there’s so much song, display and courtship, it’s like a party.
