Natural Soundscapes of Britain :: Marcus Coates & Geoff Sample

22 April – 4 September 2011
Southbank Centre celebrates the 60th anniversary of the Festival of Britain with a four-month Festival of British culture and creativity.

Visit the Lands
The Festival of Britain celebrations spread across Southbank Centre in themed areas we are calling ‘lands’, which are filled with pop-up structures, artworks, films and exhibitions. Each of these ‘lands’ is themed according to one of the most significant themes in 1951: Land, Power & Production, Seaside and People of Britain.

LAND
The countryside comes to central London in the form of Enclosure, a stunning artwork by Ben Kelly that features three traditionally made dry stone walls. Listen to Marcus Coates and Geoff Sample’s soundscape, made out of recordings of British wildlife, which can be heard across the Level 2 Terraces outside Queen Elizabeth Hall, and take a look at the Urban Fox created out of straw bales sitting at the back of Queen Elizabeth Hall. Made by Pirate Technics, it explores our attitude to one of the most loved and loathed wild animals in Britain. Find out more about Land

Free Word Salon: The Expression of Language in Animals and Humans
As more is becoming known about animal behaviour and communication, questions about the unique nature of human language come to the fore. The varied ways in which literary writers, speakers and singers play with syntax and develop a rich vocabulary of affective sounds and implied meanings demonstrate a level of sophistication, but birdsong is also surprisingly nuanced and primates draw on a highly complex repertoire of vocal patterns to get to the essence of meaning. What can each side learn from the other? Poet Ruth Padel, author of Darwin – a life in poems and the novel Where the Serpent Lives, Orlando Gough, maths graduate, composer and leader of the vocal group The Shout, meet Klaus Zuberbuhler psychologist with a special interest in animal cognition, and Geoff Sample, ornithologist and birdsong expert, in a discussion chaired by Siân Ede, Arts Director of the Gulbenkian Foundation.

In-house publications cover an ever-increasing range of birdsong and ambient soundscape recordings on CD produced by Geoff Sample; but we no longer stock cassettes. We also now offer a range of natural sound CDs from other areas of the world - including the work of such dedicated recordist/producers as John Paterson, Lang Elliott and Andrew Skeoch. We have several audio ID guides available for the birds, mammals, insects and amphibians of Britain and northern Europe.

We also licence sounds for use in film, TV, multimedia and other CD productions and produce sound-tracks for audio installations and visitor centres. For an idea of what our commercial work covers, click here.
