One day excursions exploring the natural world and the landscape of
Northumberland and the Borders.
We hold day outings for small goups (up to 8 people) wanting to learn more about wildlife and to enjoy the rich natural and cultural heritage of the area in a friendly and informal ambience. Naturally there’s an emphasis on sound and listening.
Led by ornithologist, author and sound recordist Geoff Sample. Geoff is an expert on birdsong, author of the Collins Bird Songs & Calls and an experienced all-round naturalist who has known this region all his life. He’s noted for his enthusiastic and inspiring talks and the creative ways in which he approaches his subject. Jane Field will be on hand to make sure everything runs smoothly.
Our programme of walks for the summer begins with two days exploring birdsong:
Songbirds of lowlands and uplands: Cheviot foothills and the lower Till valley.
Sunday 8th May 8.30am – 3.30pm
Sunday 5th June 8.30am – 3.30pm
During the day we’ll walk around 3-4 miles in total at several different sites: enjoying the landscape and wildlife works best with a leisurely walk, stopping as and when. You’ll learn how to listen into the distance and pick out individuals from the fabric of sound. With personal tips and help on identification, separating similar species and understanding the significance and connections of particular bird sounds.
Maximum number: 8 participants.
Walking boots recommended. Warm clothes & showerproof jacket (just in case!).
Cost: £35 per person (including light lunch)
To book: email us or call by phone 01668 283525.
We’ll require a £10 deposit on booking, to hold your place, with the balance payable at the start of the day booked. We’ll refund this deposit if for any reason the day has to be cancelled. We’ll also need an email address and ideally a mobile number, so that we can contact you at short notice, should the forecast and conditions prove so poor that the walk can’t go ahead.
